Find Your FIT

Prepare yourselves, because I am about to drop some knowledge…..Did you know that getting/being fit does not have to mean endless hours at the gym doing the same boring routine that you secretly hate. WHHHHAAAAATTTTT!!!

Seriously though, I see this all the time and I’ve experienced it myself. A friend joins the gym and loves it, they’re glowing’, they’ve lost all this weight, they’re happy all the time and just wow….they look unreal, you want that too, so you head down with them the next day and sign up, right there on the spot and you’re super excited to start this next chapter in your life. Only thing is, after a couple of sessions, you realise you hate it and why on earth is your friend still smiling while doing burpees, what the heck is wrong with her!! It might not be going to the gym, it might be pilates or crossfit or spin. Whatever it is, I’m sure you’ve experienced what I’m talking about, where something that works for somebody else, you just cannot warm to, thus exercising is seen as punishment and something you have to force yourself to do…..IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS.

Do you know what’s cool, we are all different. Embrace it. Find what works for you….It might be that you love strength training in a gym, or it might be that you have a favourite sport that you can join a team for, whatever it is, do it! Don’t waste time pretending to do something you hate just because someone on the internet loves it. The main thing is just to move your body. This also doesn’t mean that you just have to pick one form of exercise and do that alone, DO THEM ALL (not literally obviously haha). Below I have listed for you a few of my favourites and a couple of reasons why

  • Strength Training, hahaha now I am that girl that smiles during burpees and I absolutely love being sore the day after Squatting heavy…..well it’s a love hate relationship lol. But there is so much to love about strength training, not only is it a massive calorie burner and gives us beautiful toned figures with curves in all the right places, but for me, I LOVE moving my body to the best of its ability and getting the most out of life that I can. I don’t want to get old and struggle to sit on the toilet, and I love that I am able to run and crawl and jump and play with kids on the monkey bars. I love that I can move as freely as I could when I was 6 and I want to maintain that for as much of my life as I can. Strength training for me is not just a form of exercise but its my gateway to remaining independent in life.
  • Yoga, As you’ve probably already gathered, I love yoga J I think this goes hand in hand with the point of being able to move freely and get the most out of life, flexibility is such a huge part of that, Not to mention all of the other magical things I love about yoga, which you can read about it my post ‘’How I became a Yogi’’.

Hiking, Getting out in nature, breathing in the fresh air, the silence, the stillness, the view…and the leg workout, what’s not to love about hiking!!! Hiking for me can kind of be like therapy, when I’m having a bad day and I lace up my shoes and go for a hike, everything else just seems to disappear…all of a sudden I’m not worrying about whatever problem ruined my day because all I can hear is the sound of my own heartbeat and I’m staring at the most amazing view that manages to put everything in perspective.

I’m not saying that these are definitely going to work for you, these are just some of the ones I enjoy. If you are stuck in a rut with your fitness and you’re just not enjoying it any more, or maybe everyday you walk past a sign for a cool new class that sounds exciting…try something different and remain open to other forms of exercising. In turn, If you’re friend or somebody doesn’t like the same kinds of exercise as you, that’s ok. Something that works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa….which is also why I don’t particularly like these 1 size fits all exercise guides, but that a whole other kettle of fish.

  1. Bush walks are by far my favourite form of exercise! There’s nothing better than walking through the bush to find a gorgeous beach or waterfall! So much love! I’ll leave the weights to you Steph X
